We use a Sharp MX-4141N for most of our scanning, with the preferred method (of management) being scan to desktop using the accompanying Sharpdesk software. When you install the software it links to the scanner and updates the address book with your username and IP address. We have never had a problem with this in Windows 7 or XP. However, I installed it for the first time on Windows 8.1 a couple of weeks ago and it is not working. The software installs fine, connects to the scanner and updates the address book, but the IP address in the address book is wrong. Instead of being in the 192.168.x.x format it is like an APIPA address (169.254.x.x), though the laptop itself does have a valid IP in the 192.168.x.x format.
I reviewed the network settings on the laptop and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. I've tried using a static IP, connecting through wired and wireless, ipconfig /release and /renew, turned off ipv6, and made sure the latest Sharpdesk software (3.3) is compatible with 8.1.This is the first Windows 8.1 computer I've setup so I'm assuming I'm missing some simple option somewhere that is different from Windows 7. Any ideas hive mind?Note I have set the user up with scan to network folder as an alternative, which they are happy with, but I'd still like to figure out what is going on. Hi Kevin!I've been in touch with Sharpdesk support on this. Here's our initial thoughts:When a DHCP server fails, APIPA (Automatic Private IP Addressing – A Windows feature) allocates IP addresses in the private range 169.254.0.1 to 169.254.255.254. APIPA is enabled on all DHCP clients in Windows environments unless the computer's Registry is modified to disable it.
This scenario can occur if a Windows workstation cannot find the MFP on the network or vice versa. It is quite possible that something in your network environment is blocking it or causing a conflict.Microsoft offers an explanation and work around for a similar issue. Cause of getting APIPA (169.254.x.x) is failure of DHCP server to get IP address or might be DNS service failure. Check here: If this does not help you identify the issue, you might check in with the Sharp dealer you purchased the machine with. However, it might be an issue in the network that you have to identify.Hope this helps!
